New 2022 Honda Civic Touring Sedan Review, Specs, Interior

New 2022 Honda Civic Touring Sedan Review, Specs, Interior  – It only takes one glance at the 2022 Honda Civic sedan and you’ll see that it is a completely different car. The outgoing Civic’s noisy character lines, C-shaped rear lights banks, and busy front mug are gone. They are replaced by a mature exterior that has a higher stance, a clearer greenhouse, and a sharp beltline.

The cabin’s hexagonal mesh interior (real metal!) is a striking feature. You can also see and feel the significant upgrades to the cabin’s dash trim and digital gauges.

But, has the Civic really changed under all that shiny, new metal, leather, and plastic? Our instrumented testing suggests otherwise. However, Honda’s chassis engineers and powertrain engineers weren’t less busy than interior and exterior stylists when developing the 11th-generation 2022 Civic. Toning is all about what happens to a car with a strong core. Honda has been tuning the Touring’s 1.5-liter turbo I-4 engine and the Civic’s chassis for over 50 years. This process has continued for more than a decade. It is important to keep improving that core, especially as you age.

Performance

However, all that hard work did not pay off when it came down to straight-line performance numbers. The 2022 Honda Civic Touring’s 7.4 seconds 0-60 mph time is two ticks slower than what we measured for the 10th-generation Touring sedan in 2015. This was despite its 180 horsepower and 177 lbft of torque (an increase of 6 horsepower and 15 pounds respectively). The quarter-mile time was 15.7 seconds at 91.4 MPH, also 0.2 seconds and 1 mph slower than the Civic Touring sedan in 2016. Weight is the most likely cause, as the 2022 Civic has gained some weight. According to our scales, the new Civic sedan is 338 pounds heavier than the previous model.

But all those extra pounds are muscle. Honda claims that the new Civic has a 13 percent higher bending rigidity and 8% more torsional rigidity than its predecessor. This is evident in our handling tests. The new 2022 Civic has a better score than the outgoing car (0.88 g to 0.83 g) as well as in the figure-eight (26.7 secs at 0.64g vs. 27.5 secs at 0.62g). These stats are a good indicator of the future high-performance Civic models, including a Si-based Si.

Chris Walton, a road test editor, said that the figure-eight and skidpad numbers could have been even more impressive if it weren’t for some annoying nannies. He noted that the skidpad is largely neutral, with mild understeer. However, stability control cannot be turned off so the throttle is cranked, which limits skidpad speed. The new 2022 Civic has 11.1-inch vented discs in the front and 10.2-inch rear, each with single-piston brake calipers. The Civic was able to be towed down from 60 mph in just 122 feet. This is 1 foot less than the previous-gen model. The possibility of adding grippier tires might have helped to reduce that distance.

The 2022 Civic’s handling and ride have been significantly improved in real life. You can credit the core work of a 1.4-inch wheelbase stretch, and a wider rear track. Many other updates were made to MacPherson’s multilink rear suspension and MacPherson front strut. This was primarily to decrease suspension friction. To reduce noise and harsh impact shock, multiple suspension bushings, ball joints, and damper mount points were updated. Honda claims that the result has reduced harshness noise by 20%

From the moment you touch a bump in the road, the changes are obvious. We’ve never seen a more refined Civic Touring. It is that good. It has very little impact harshness, which is something you won’t often find in shorter-wheelbase front-drive cars. A host of noise-reduction measures have made the car quieter on freeways, including the Civic’s first application of urethane foam to hollow areas of its body. The powertrain will produce power under hard acceleration before it settles into a step shift action to reduce the “rubber band effect” of continuously variable transmissions. The CVT features a downshift control function that adds engine brakes when going downhill. It has been updated to improve engine response as you get on it. The CVT helps to reduce turbo lag in the 1.5-liter Civic Touring sedan’s engine. Despite its pedestrian acceleration numbers, the engine feels linear in its overall power delivery.

Although we weren’t able to go aggressively from a handling standpoint, the Civic’s chassis felt comfortable when we were driving hard on an onramp. We had ample time to test the Civic Touring’s Traffic Jam Assist and adaptive cruise control systems in L.A. traffic jams. These are both parts of Honda Sensing’s safety suite. Although the adaptive cruise was able to do its job and the brakes sometimes came on abruptly, the system still stopped at a stop. Traffic Jam Assist can drive at 45 mph and will steer for you until your turn. It was fine, although we wish we could have had more control over the steering wheel.
